Social Psychology Theory
« Back to Glossary IndexSocial psychology theory explains how we’re affected by others in a social context via social norms, group pressure, and persuasion techniques — how the actual, imagined, or implied presence of others influences us, along with cultural background and social roles. The theory tests the impact of social environments on individual actions and interactions within groups. Prominent theories include attribution theory (explaining how people assign causes to behaviors), conformity (individuals changing behavior due to others’ influence), social comparison theory (comparing ourselves to others to gauge self-worth), group dynamics (patterns of interaction, behaviors, psychological processes within a group),social perception (recognizing, interpreting, responding to verbal/nonverbal cues),and social identity theory (understanding how group membership affects self-perception).
