Self-Perception

« Back to Glossary Index

Self-perception is how we view our values, beliefs, characteristics, and image. It combines self-identity and self-image with self-esteem or self-criticism. It influences how we feel, think, and act, and what we choose to do, including how much effort we put into them and how likely we are to do them again in the future. Self-perceptions are often different from how others perceive us. If I believe I’m good at my job and have improved my skills but my boss criticizes me, my self-esteem can take a hit—though constructive criticism is still valuable.
