Self-Concept Clarity (SCC)

« Back to Glossary Index

Self-concept clarity (SCC) is how coherently and consistently we define our self-identities so we can distinguish our thoughts/feelings/actions from others. High SCC allows for strong empathy and understanding of others. Conversely, low SCC struggles with empathy with challenging social interactions, possibly due to misinterpreting others’ intentions or reacting poorly when faced with others. Research finds self-concept clarity can mediate the relationship between stress and wellbeing.
