Self-Complexity
« Back to Glossary IndexSelf-complexity suggests we have multiple aspects to our identity — from social roles, personality traits, experience, relationships, psychological habits, and preferences, including sexual preferences. With high self-complexity, we can better handle negative events and stressors because we rely on more self-aspects that can act as a buffer against negative self-appraisals. A woman who sees herself as a successful lawyer, mother, wife, and friend may better handle a divorce than someone who only identifies as a wife. Also see Self-Labeling
