Individuation
« Back to Glossary IndexIndividuation is Carl Jung’s term for the lifelong psychological process of becoming a more fully developed and integrated individual. It involves becoming increasingly aware of and reconciling different aspects of oneself — including parts that may conflict or have remained unconscious — rather than simply conforming to expectations imposed by family, society, or one’s earlier identity. For Jung, individuation continues through adulthood. It’s not the same as self-identity, but describes an ongoing process of becoming more fully oneself.
