Hyperactivity
« Back to Glossary IndexHyperactivity in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) refers to excessive or poorly regulated physical activity or restlessness that is inconsistent with a person’s developmental level or the demands of the situation. In children, it often appears as constant movement, fidgeting, climbing, talking excessively, or difficulty remaining seated. In adolescents and adults, hyperactivity may become less outwardly visible and instead be experienced as inner restlessness, difficulty relaxing, feeling driven to stay busy, or an inability to “switch off.” Hyperactivity is one of the three core symptom domains of ADHD, along with inattention and impulsivity. It varies widely among individuals and often changes across the lifespan.
