Hyper-Individualism
« Back to Glossary IndexHyper-individualism is an intensified focus on personal autonomy, self-fulfillment, and psychological wellbeing that places the needs of the individual above the obligations, compromises, or enduring bonds of family and community. It reflects a cultural shift toward defining a good life primarily through personal happiness, self-protection, and freedom from harmful relationships. While this mindset can empower people to leave genuinely abusive or destructive situations, it may also encourage viewing family relationships mainly through the lens of personal cost, potentially undervaluing accountability, repair, interdependence, and the difficult work of navigating imperfect human systems. In estrangement, hyper-individualism helps explain why cutting ties may increasingly be seen not as moral failure, but as an acceptable — sometimes necessary — path toward protecting the self.
