Estrangement

« Back to Glossary Index

Estrangement is the distancing or breakdown of a close relationship, often marked by reduced or complete loss of contact. It can develop gradually over time or occur after a specific rupture, when conflict, repeated hurt, or deeper relational fractures make continued connection feel untenable. Estrangement is sometimes chosen as a way to create safety, stability, or relief from ongoing distress, though it often carries significant emotional consequences, including grief, ambiguity, and the loss of shared identity. It doesn’t always signal the end of a relationship, but it reflects a point at which connection, as it existed, could not be sustained.
