Empathic Attunement
« Back to Glossary IndexEmpathic attunement is our ability to recognize, understand, and respond appropriately to another person’s emotional state. Unlike empathy, which involves sharing or understanding another person’s feelings, empathic attunement emphasizes the ongoing process of accurately perceiving and responding to those feelings, needs, and perspectives within a relationship — and adjusting our responses accordingly. It’s important to healthy attachment, caregiving, psychotherapy, and close relationships by helping people feel seen, understood, and emotionally connected. When empathic attunement is absent or inconsistent, individuals may feel misunderstood, emotionally neglected, or disconnected from others.
