Differential Diagnosis

« Back to Glossary Index

Differential diagnosis is the systematic process used to distinguish between two or more conditions that present with symptom overlap. In bipolar disorder, this involves a detective-like analysis to determine the underlying cause of a specific behavior. For example, a clinician must decide if a patient’s grandiosity is a transient state caused by a manic episode, or a stable trait of a personality disorder. By evaluating the timing, duration, and triggers of these symptoms, the clinician can rule out “look-alike” disorders to reach the most accurate primary diagnosis. This step is the essential bridge between recognizing symptoms and initiating a targeted, effective treatment plan.
