Asynchronous Development

« Back to Glossary Index

Asynchronous development is a pattern in which different aspects of a person’s development progress at different rates. It’s often associated with giftedness and neurodivergence: a person may have unusually advanced abilities in one area — such as reasoning, language, creativity, or mathematics — while developing more slowly in areas such as executive functioning (EF), emotional regulation, social skills, or motor planning and abilities. These uneven abilities can create frustration, misunderstanding, and expectations that do not match the person’s actual capacities. The greater the gap between areas of strength and difficulty, the more challenging the mismatch can be for the individual and for those around them. Also see Affect Regulation/Dysregulation
