Applied Relaxation (AR)

« Back to Glossary Index

Applied Relaxation (AR) are mind-body exercises for generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) to identify panic stressors, relax rapidly, counteract, and stop anxiety reactions. Relaxation techniques decrease muscle tension before anxiety cycle strengthens — relaxing in the presence of panic cues followed by real-world situations. AR techniques include sustained deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, guided imagery, and systematic desensitization. Research studies show AR results — used for phobias, panic disorder, headache, pain, epilepsy, and tinnitus — were significantly better than no-treatment and as effective as other therapies. After a year, there were benefits or further improvements.
