Activation
« Back to Glossary IndexActivation is a general increase in physiological, cognitive, or emotional “readiness” or arousal — how turned on or energized a system is. In mental health, activation refers to the baseline level of “on-ness” in the nervous system. It can range from very low (slowed, fatigued, shut down) to very high (energized, restless, unable to settle). For example, in bipolar depression, activation is often low (fatigue, slowed thinking). In hypomania or mania, activation is high (increased energy, decreased need for sleep, heightened goal-directed activity). Activation is not inherently good or bad — it’s foundational. The question is whether it’s regulated and appropriately matched to context.
