Conflict Detection Impairment

Conflict detection impairment is difficulty in identifying situations with conflicting information/stimuli. Some with ADHD might not recognize a discrepancy between different data or actions they need to take, leading to potential errors in decision-making or response selection. Or, while driving, they might not notice a potential collision risk due to being distracted by other stimuli. In addition to ADHD, other causes are neurological conditions (damage to the anterior cingulate cortex/ACC) and anxiety disorders (greater sensitivity to potential threats and less ability to filter conflicting information). Difficulty to:

  • Identify inconsistencies: Notice when information contradicts itself.
  • Inhibit inappropriate responses: Stop themselves from acting on a conflicting impulse.
  • Make accurate decisions: Choose the correct course of action in situations with conflicting options.
