Vigilance or Attention
« Back to Glossary IndexVigilance or attention, an aspect of the status pursuit in narcissism (SPIN) model, is a state of alertness and being prepared to react to relevant stimuli, even when those stimuli are infrequent or subtle. It’s closely tied to sustained attention (capacity to focus on a task/stimulus for an extended period without losing alertness). Over time, sustained attention can decline, a phenomenon known as the vigilance decrement, where performance on tasks requiring vigilance decreases. Vigilance can be influenced by motivation, stress levels, nature of the task, and our overall state of alertness and wakefulness. It’s supported by various brain regions and neurotransmitter systems, including those involved in arousal and attention.
