Vestibular System

« Back to Glossary Index

The vestibular system is responsible for maintaining balance and monitoring orientation/movement of our heads in any direction (vestibular sensation). Five vestibular receptor organs in the inner ear are responsible: utricle, saccule, and three semicircular canals (vestibular labyrinth). The utricle and saccule are most responsive to acceleration in a straight line (gravity). Also see Sensory System
