Vagus Nerve
« Back to Glossary IndexThe vagus nerve is variously known as the “wanderer nerve” or the “brain-gut connection,” as it carries an extensive range of signals from the brain to the digestive system and back again. It extends from its origin in the brainstem through the neck and the thorax down to the abdomen. The vagus nerve also connects to neurons and synapses involved in emotional and cognitive functions — and which are hindered by depression.
