Tuberous Sclerosis / Sclerosis Complex (TSC)

« Back to Glossary Index

Tuberous sclerosis or tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is an uncommon genetic disorder — gene mutations block a protein key to cell growth/metabolism — causing benign tumor growth in many parts of the body. Half of those with TSC have autism — much higher than general population — as well as developmental delay, intellectual disability, and mood disorders. It can be mild enough not to be detected until adulthood, if at all.
