Transsexual

« Back to Glossary Index

Transsexual is a term used in medical literature or by some transgender people describing those who have transitioned through medical intervention. A transsexual person experienced a gender identity inconsistent with their assigned sex and took steps to permanently transition to the sex or gender with which they identify. They usually seek medical assistance (hormone replacement therapy and gender-affirming surgery). Transsexual is a subset of transgender, but some transsexual people reject the trans label. A medical diagnosis of gender dysphoria might apply. Understanding has changed dramatically since outdated 20th-century medical beliefs/practices. Transsexual people were once classified as mentally ill and treated poorly by the medical establishment — and remain so in much of the developing world.
