Toxic

« Back to Glossary Index

Toxic in today’s jargon means emotionally harmful/destructive behaviors to our well-being, often characterized by control, manipulation, and lack of respect. These behaviors hurt us and our relationships, as they include a terrible environment of criticism, jealousy, disrespect of boundaries, and emotional or physical abuse, undermining our self-worth and creating a power imbalance. In a toxic relationship with a narcissist, for example, we can feel guilty, blaming ourselves for problems, or be the brunt of their anger to control and manipulate us. This is not normal conflict, with disagreements common to any relationship. Toxic interactions are a consistent pattern of behavior that erodes emotional safety and equality. Research shows chronic toxic exposure can lead to stress and negatively affect brain function.
