Threshold

« Back to Glossary Index

Threshold is used in bipolar research to refer to the level of stimulation, stress, or activation required to trigger a significant mood episode. In biological systems, thresholds help explain why small stimuli may produce no noticeable effect until they accumulate or exceed a certain level. In mental health contexts, the concept is used to describe the point at which emotional or mood-regulation systems become sufficiently activated to produce symptoms. But thresholds aren’t fixed, shifting over time due to factors such as sensitization, repeated stress exposure, or changes in biological regulation systems. A lower threshold means smaller triggers may elicit stronger responses; a higher threshold means greater resistance to activation. Also see: Vulnerability Arc
