Sympathetic-Adreno-Medullar (SAM) Axis

« Back to Glossary Index

Sympathetic-adreno-medullar (SAM) axis is a neuroendocrine system that’s part of the body’s stress response. In response to a stressor, the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) activates the SAM axis, which releases adrenaline and norepinephrine from the adrenal medulla, which can increase blood pressure and heartrate. The SAM axis also activates the fight-or-flight response (FFR). After the threat has passed, the parasympathetic nervous system returns the body to a balanced state.
