Superior Temporal Gyrus (STG)

« Back to Glossary Index

Superior temporal gyrus (STG) in the brain’s temporal lobe is involved in speech and language. In speech processing, the STG is responsible for distinguishing linguistic features, like the acoustics/phonetics of consonants/vowels and intonational pitch. The STG also contains the primary auditory cortex, which processes sounds and is responsible for short-term auditory memory. The STG’s right hemisphere affects social perception, and its parieto-insular-vestibular cortex is central to perceiving vestibular sensation. Also see: Wernicke’s and Broca’s Areas
