Stonewalling
« Back to Glossary IndexStonewalling is a common is a narcissistic defense strategy involving a complete shutdown of communication. The narcissist becomes emotionally inaccessible by shutting down and withdrawing from a conversation or interaction, refusing to engage or respond. It can involve giving the silent treatment, avoiding eye contact, or physically leaving the situation. Withdrawing and disengaging behaviors can damage relationships by leaving partners feeling ignored, dismissed, and disconnected. While some stonewalling is intentional, it can also be an unconscious — a response to feeling overwhelmed, triggered, or unable to cope with difficult emotions.
