Stable Conflict

« Back to Glossary Index

Stable conflict is a persistent, internal struggle without clear resolution. When two+ threats are roughly equal, approaching one threat increases retreat from the other/s. This minimizes fear/anxiety by increasing distance from threat. Stable conflict occurs when a goal is both appealing and repulsive: going to a dance to belong to a group, but afraid of ridicule. It can be caused by different perspectives, misaligned incentives, or different life experiences, values, or goals. It happens when different neural pathways and brain regions (like the anterior cingulate cortex/ACC) are simultaneously processing and reconciling conflicting information or motor commands.
