Somatic Motor Division

« Back to Glossary Index

The somatic motor division, a subdivision of the peripheral nervous system (PNS), sends signals from the central nervous system/CNS (brain/spinal cord) through somatic efferent or motor neurons to skeletal muscles, enabling voluntary movements like walking, lifting, or typing, essentially controlling all conscious muscle actions in the body. Unlike the autonomic nervous system that controls involuntary functions like digestion and heartrate, the somatic motor division handles conscious muscle movements.
