Social Preference

« Back to Glossary Index

Social preference is considering more than our own personal gain. We also make decisions based on the wellbeing and outcomes of others, often motivated by altruism (helping others without expecting personal reward), reciprocity (responding positively to kind actions), and inequity aversion (disliking unfair situations). Social preference can include prosocial behaviors like cooperation, helping others, and considering group dynamics. In contrast to people-pleasing behavior, it’s considered a relatively healthy aspect of social behavior when balanced with personal needs
