Social Identity and Self-Efficacy

Social identity and self-efficacy are the subject of numerous theories, one of which proposes self can be grouped under the three self-aspects of:

  • Existence — The most fundamental self-aspect, emerging in infancy and developing a broad sense of existence as a sentient being—distinct in the world — as we grow and change. 
  • Identification — Comprised of our personality traits, beliefs, values, social roles, and life experiences. 
  • Location — Our perceived place within the social/physical/psychological environment. How we experience our own presence in space and time and relate our physical body to our conscious self.
