Sexual Identity Formation and Integration

« Back to Glossary Index

Sexual identity formation and integration, also known as coming-out, has many theoretical models, which, taken together, describe a process as LGBTQ+ individuals strive for congruence among their sexual orientation (sexual attractions, thoughts, fantasies), sexual behavior, and sexual identity. It includes becoming aware of and questioning one’s sexual orientation and exploring it more, and becoming involved in LGBTQ+-related social activities and/or sexual activities. Identity integration consolidates identity, when LGBTQ+ individuals accept their identity, resolve internalized homophobia (transforming negative to positive attitudes), feel comfortable with others knowing, and then disclosing that identity (coming out).
