Sensory Over-Responsivity

« Back to Glossary Index

Sensory over-responsivity, also called hypersensitivity or sensory defensiveness, is a category of sensory modulation disorder (SMD) that reacts intensely to sensory stimuli, like loud noises or rough textures that others don’t react to. Children can be highly reactive to sensations and feel bombarded with information. Hypersensitivity might trigger fight-or-flight response (FFR) or result in aggressive or withdrawal/avoidance behavior. Also see Sensory Discrimination Disorder (SDD) and Sensory Overload
