Sensory-Based Motor Disorder (SBMD)

« Back to Glossary Index

Sensory-based motor disorder (SBMD), a category of sensory processing disorder (SPD), is caused by issues with vestibular (balance), proprioceptive (body position), and tactile (touch) systems, making it difficult to stabilize the body. Difficulties with balance, motor coordination, and planning/executing movements leads to clumsiness, poor body awareness, and challenges with both simple (tying shoes) and complex (sports) motor tasks. SBMD subtypes include: dyspraxia (motor planning issues) and postural disorder (balance/core strength problems). SBMD isn’t about structural brain issues but rather how the brain processes sensory input for movement, making coordinated action challenging.
