Sensorimotor System
« Back to Glossary IndexThe sensorimotor system integrates sensory information and motor control so we can execute voluntary movement in the world. It stems from the sensorimotor cortex, within the cerebral cortex, and includes both the primary motor cortex and the primary somatosensory cortex. One of six domains in the Research Domain Criteria (RDoC), developed by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), the sensorimotor system develops through practice, feedback, and error correction. In babies, the sensorimotor stage is when they discover the difference between themselves and their environment. Mental/physical illness can result from it being over- or underactive.
