Self-Salience

« Back to Glossary Index

Self-salience are relational schemas ascribing importance of self relative to others. At the spectrum’s high end, self is privileged over others. At the low end, others are privileged over self. Low self-salience can increase the risk of internalizing conditions (anxiety/depression). High self-salience can lead to externalizing behaviors (substance abuse and antisocial behavior). Moderating the extremes helps mental health. Also see Salience
