Self-Righteous Narcissism

« Back to Glossary Index

Self-righteous narcissism is characterized by a belief in one’s moral superiority, along with a need for admiration and lack of empathy. These narcissists are validated when seen as more virtuous or correct than others, often leading to judgmental behavior, controlling behavior, rigid adherence to their own standards, and contempt for those who don’t meet them. Compared to altruistic narcissism (gain narcissistic supply from good deeds), self-righteous narcissists gain supply from their perceived moral superiority. Self-righteous narcissism is a form of communal narcissism (which is a subtype of grandiose narcissism) — but the source of grandiosity is their exaggerated moral standing rather than just being the smartest or most attractive.
