Self-Protection or Self-Preservation
« Back to Glossary IndexSelf-protection, or self-preservation, is our innate instinct to remain alive, avoid threats, pursue our goals, and safeguard our wellbeing. We take actions to shield ourselves from physical, emotional, or psychological damage. We evaluate potential dangers and make cautious decisions to minimize risks. We also shield our mental health by prioritizing healthy behaviors, like eating nutritious foods, exercising, seeking medical attention, and other stress-reducing activities, like relaxation, sports, art, and social connection. However, in narcissism, among other conditions, self-protection can become dysregulated, leading to unhealthy behaviors or maladaptive coping mechanisms. Excessive fear or avoidance of risks can hinder daily life and prevent individuals from taking necessary steps to protect themselves.
