Self–Other Distinction (SOD)
« Back to Glossary IndexSelf–other distinction (SOD), also known as self–other control, helps us distinguish our own mental/physical state from those of others—a key skill for social interaction. We recognize our thoughts, perceptions, emotions, experiences/actions, and bodies from those of others. A clear sense of self helps to accurately perceive and understand others (empathy), thus facilitating strong SOD over weak. Impaired SOD may be linked to a disinhibited ability to imitate others and other symptoms seen in borderline personality disorder (BPD).
