Self-Criticism

« Back to Glossary Index

Self-criticism is evaluating ourselves harshly, often through negative self-talk, by over-focusing on perceived flaws, past mistakes, or shortcomings. In contrast to constructive self-evaluation (objective feedback for growth), self-criticism can be demeaning and destructive and lead to feeling guilt, shame, and fear of failure. This can in turn cause anxiety, depression, and a tendency to withdraw from others. Also see Self-Esteem
