Reward System or Pathways:

« Back to Glossary Index

The brain’s reward system or pathways (mesocorticolimbic circuit) contains neural structures like the ventral tegmental area (VTA) and the nucleus accumbens, which release dopamine along dopamine pathways (most common is the mesolimbic dopamine pathway) when a reward is received or anticipated. Rewards are the motivating parts of stimuli (objects, events, people). Being singled out for a job well done, smelling food being prepared in the kitchen, or positive social experiences like laughter can all activate the reward system, promoting feelings of wellbeing and social connection. From detection to assessment, it prepares the nervous system for reward processing.
