Response Tendency

« Back to Glossary Index

Response tendencies refer to how people respond — cognitively and behaviorally — to certain situations or sensory stimuli. People acquire these tendencies through social conditioning, learning, and personal experience. Also see Conflict-Monitoring Theory. Response tendences when threatened:

  • Respond aggressively, due to behaviors reinforced in other situations.
  • Withdraw or avoid certain situations, based on past negative experiences.
