Resistance Stage

« Back to Glossary Index

Resistance stage is the second of three fight-or-flight response (FFR) stages in the general adaptation syndrome (GAS) theory — in which the functions of the body’s systems are faced with a stressor. The resistance stage takes place if the stressful event persists for extended periods of time, or in the case of chronic stress, the body adapts to cope with the higher stress levels. In the latter case, the body keeps secreting stress hormones, and the physical stress response stays elevated. This induces the resistance stage, with symptoms of poor concentration, irritability, and frustration. See also Alarm and Exhaustion Stages.
