Rejection Sensitivity
« Back to Glossary IndexRejection sensitivity is heightened vulnerability to perceived or actual rejection. It can be a trait in individuals with narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) but is particularly prominent in the vulnerable narcissism (fragile sense of self and deep need for external validation, highly sensitive to criticism or rejection). They can react to perceived or actual rejection with defensiveness, withdrawal, or even attempts to gain sympathy or attention. Related concepts:
- Rejection Sensitivity Dysphoria (RSD), where individuals experience severe emotional pain in reaction to a perceived slight or rejection, often leading to avoidance or overcompensation.
- Hostile Attribution Bias, where vulnerable narcissists may interpret ambiguous situations as hostile or critical, further exacerbating their sensitivity to rejection.
