Regulation is the brain’s ability to keep its core systems — mood, energy, sleep, reward, stress response, and thinking — within a flexible, stable range over time. A well-regulated brain does not eliminate strong emotion or high energy. Instead, it speeds up and slows down in response to real-world demands, and then reliably returns to baseline. Its systems stay coordinated with one another — sleep aligns with energy, energy aligns with motivation, motivation aligns with judgment. In bipolar disorder, regulation is more fragile. The same systems that exist in every braincircadian rhythms, dopamine signaling, stress hormones, mitochondrial energy production — can become amplified, uncoupled, or slow to reset. The issue isn’t the intensity of personality or depth of feeling, but stability, adaptability, and synchronization of these underlying control systems, that is, timing, calibration, and recovery.
