Real-Self
« Back to Glossary IndexThe real-self is our genuine, authentic identity, encompassing the person we actually are right now, flaws and all — our characteristics, strengths, weaknesses, values, and experiences — and demonstrating a consistent and coherent sense of self over time. Developed by Carl Rogers, real-self achieves congruence (alignment) with our ideal-self (who you want to be and the goals we want to achieve) — as essential to mental wellbeing (fulfillment and authenticity). Understanding our real-self involves an honest assessment of our thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and self-image, including our intrinsic inclinations, abilities, and inclinations. Significant incongruence between real- and ideal-self can lead to disappointment, perfectionism, and inner conflict. Also see Ego-Self and True-Self
