Rationalization

« Back to Glossary Index

Rationalization is a defense mechanism where narcissists distort reality to avoid feelings of shame, protect fragile self-esteem, and maintain a positive self-image. They may downplay or deny actions to justify their behavior through self-serving narratives, creating a fantasy world where they are always right and justified, even when evidence suggests otherwise. Instead of owning up to making a mistake at work, for example, they might blame the instructions for being unclear or someone for sabotaging their efforts.
