Proprioceptors

« Back to Glossary Index

Proprioceptors are sensory receptors located near the body’s moving parts (muscles, joints) that sense and interpret body position, the physical conditions of these locations, and kinesthetic functions — the “sense of the self.” Proprioceptors respond to stimuli occurring in skeletal muscles, tendons, ligaments, and joints — and are required for locomotion, motor skills, and help in maintaining posture. They sense muscle movement, tension in tendons during muscle contractions, and sense movement in the ligaments. In fish, proprioceptors detect vibration and help in navigation.
