Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR)

« Back to Glossary Index

Progressive muscle relaxation (PMR) is a relaxation technique that involves tensing and then relaxing specific muscle groups in the body to achieve a state of deep physical relaxation and mental calmness. It’s based on the idea that physical tension is directly linked to mental anxiety, and by systematically releasing muscle tension, one can also reduce psychological stress and anxiety. The technique typically involves a systematic process of focusing on one muscle group at a time, moving sequentially through the entire body (starting with the toes and moving up to the head, or vice versa). PMR is a versatile and widely used technique with applications for: anxiety and stress management, insomnia, pain management, and overall wellbeing.
