Prestige-/Competence-based Status

« Back to Glossary Index

Prestige-/competence-based status is a level of social rank earned through expertise, skill, knowledge, competence, and success, in contrast to dominance-/intimidation-based status (status achieved through coercion, aggression, and intimidation). People with prestige are respected and admired, which leads to others learning from them, copying their actions, and deferring to their opinions. This type of status is associated with positive traits, generates respect, and creates stable social hierarchies to the benefit of both leader and followers, like cooperation and the display of valued knowledge and skill. Accomplishments in fields like science, art, music, or athletics can lead to high prestige. Excellence and advancement within demanding professions, such as medicine or law, also confer prestige. Unlike dominance hierarchies, where subordinates might follow out of fear, individuals in prestige-based hierarchies follow voluntarily due to respect for the leader’s abilities. Prestige biases abstract qualities and social learning, meaning people are more likely to learn new skills or adopt new ideas from those with high prestige
