Preoccupied or Fearful Attachment

« Back to Glossary Index

Preoccupied of fearful attachment, a strong desire for closeness and a fear of abandonment, mostly stems from insecure early childhood relationships — a factor in developing narcissistic traits. Recognizing the influence of attachment history helps individuals develop self-compassion and change maladaptive relationship behaviors. People with a preoccupied attachment style are characterized by:

  • Intense need for relationships, craving closeness/intimacy, seeking validation/reassurance.
  • Fear of abandonment or rejection, worrying constantly and becoming clingy and insecure.
  • Vulnerable narcissism, anxious/preoccupied with partners, unsure of whether they’re loved
