Positive or Life Narcissism

« Back to Glossary Index

Positive or Life Narcissism, a concept developed by French psychoanalyst André Green, is Green’s answer to healthy narcissism. It focuses on achieving unity, partially replenishing the self, and achieving oneness. It’s characterized by pride in accomplishments and alignment with the greater good, in contrast to negative or death narcissism (destructive tendency seeking self-negation and psychic death). Positive narcissism is motivating to find joy in strengths and achievements without being arrogant or harming others:

  • Healthy self-esteem: Strong sense of pride in oneself, genuine satisfaction in one’s abilities and  accomplishments, and joy in the positive aspects of one’s personality.
  • Integrity: Well-developed and stable sense of self that isn’t fragile or dependent on external validation—and is in harmony with broader societal goals and values.
  • Balance: Focused on self-worth and integrity, not superiority or constant need for admiration
