Pheromones

« Back to Glossary Index

Pheromones are chemoreceptors (chemical signals) that many animals and insects use to find a mating partner, communicate alarm, or mark their territory. For humans, there’s no scientific consensus as to what defines or identifies a pheromone and whether human substances (like sweat) are secreted by one individual to be received by another. Science is investigating some substances, particularly for their potential influence on gender perception and sexual motivation. But it will take years for research to be definitive one way or the other.
